Fire Prevention Week

The McAdoo Fire Company held Fire Prevention at a few places this year McAdoo Catholic, McAdoo Elementary and the  Cub Scouts troop which was held at St Kundagaundas hall. The members of the fire company taught kids about the importance of smoke alarms, stop drop and roll, pre plan with family, the importance of 911, and alot more. We hope everyone learned something and use this useful information in the future if needed.

Thank you from the Cub Scouts

My name is Diana Zajac and I am the Cubmaster for Cub Scout Pack 643 based here in McAdoo. At our October Pack meeting on Monday, Oct. 5th, many members of the McAdoo Fire Company, including my son Allan, were kind enough to accept a very last-minute invitation to speak to our scouts about fire safety

Bobby Leshko's talk with the boys about how they can be safe, the juniors demonstrating how a firefighter in bunker gear is not scary, the ride on the ladder truck. What a night! Our scouts have been talking about it ever since and want to know when we can do it again.

I wanted to take this opportunity to pass along my heartfelt thanks and the appreciation of our leadership and the scout parents for taking the time to join us for the evening. It was interesting and exciting for the scouts in so many ways and now they all want to be firefighters, just like the people at McAdoo Fire Co. I can't think of better role models.

I would greatly appreciate having this passed on to the members who gave us their time and shared their knowledge and expertise with the boys. They truly had a wonderful time. Thank you so very much again.  Diana Zajac

Pak Tracker Training

Members of the Hazleton Fire Dept, McAdoo Fire Co and the Freeland Fire Dept trained how to save one of there own. The companies had 1 hour presentation on the Pak Tracker device at the City's Southside Station. Then everyone headed up to Holy Trinity located on Wyoming street for practical training. Crews filled the building with fake smoke and searched for downed firefighters. Crews located the down firefighters with the Pak Tracker device and thermal imaging cameras. There were about 35 firefighters from the 3 companies that attended the training class. The Pak tracker device is a receiver that picks up a signal from a transmitter which is located on the SCBA. This device was purchased along with Scott airpacks thru a grant.

Grilling

Slideshow: Gas grill safety tips before you start grilling

NFPA Safety Tips
dot Propane and charcoal BBQ grills must only be used outdoors. If used indoors, or in any enclosed spaces, such as tents, they pose both a fire hazard and the risk of exposing occupants to toxic gases and potential asphyxiation.
dot Position the grill well away from siding, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
dot Place the grill a safe distance from lawn games, play areas and foot traffic.
dot See all safety tips.

Fire in the grill, under hot dogs and burgers, is a welcome sight at the family cookout. But fire anywhere else can make your summer kick-off barbecue memorable for all the wrong reasons.

Facts & figures

  • In 2005, gas and charcoal grills caused 3,400 structure fires and 4,900 outdoor fires in or on home properties, resulting in a combined direct property loss of $137 million.
  • Gas grills have a higher fire risk than charcoal grills; leaks and breaks are the leading cause, accounting for two-fifths (41%) of the gas grill structure and outdoor fires.
  • Gas-fueled grills caused an estimated 2,800 home structure fires and 4,400 home outdoor fires in 2005.
